Technical Detail
Kingmach Soil moisture and temperature sensors are designed for long-term embedment in challenging environments. The probe body is typically 316L stainless steel, chosen because it resists corrosion in most agricultural and natural soils. Sensitive elements are sealed to prevent moisture ingress, and we offer a choice of cable materials—PVC for general use or PUR for rougher burial conditions. Custom cable lengths and connector options are standard; just tell us your network layout. On the output side, the sensor can be ordered with SDI-12 for low-power field loggers, RS485 with Modbus RTU for industrial systems, or a 0–2.5V analog signal that works with older dataloggers. Measurement current draw is minimal, often staying under 10mA during active sampling, which helps in solar-powered or battery-operated stations where every milliampere counts. The temperature element is a precision thermistor or RTD, co-located with the moisture sensor so you get paired readings from the same soil volume. Moisture is measured via dielectric constant, with calibration curves that can handle typical mineral soils out of the box. For unusual substrates—volcanic ash, high-organic peat, or heavy clay—we can work with your lab to develop a custom calibration. The stainless steel probe body is resistant to most soil conditions. If you are dealing with extreme pH levels or very high salinity, just let us know during quoting. Our technical team can recommend protective coatings or alternative materials for the exposed parts.
You can select SDI-12, RS485 with Modbus RTU, or a 0–2.5V analog output at the time of ordering. Each version comes with its own wiring diagram, and we also offer pre-wired junction boxes if you need a cleaner field installation. Most data loggers will recognize these signals directly.
Factory calibration is adequate for most mineral soils. We recommend a drift check after the first year, then annually if your project demands high data accuracy. The temperature sensor is factory-tested and typically requires no recalibration.
You can install individual sensors at different depths in the same borehole, or we can build a multi-depth probe assembly for you. Both approaches work; ask our sales team about cable management and anchoring options for your specific soil profile.
